MQTT stands for MQTT (formerly MQ Telemetry Transport), a networking abbreviation.
A lightweight publish-subscribe messaging protocol designed for sensors and devices on low-bandwidth or unreliable networks. Devices publish messages to topics on a central broker, and subscribers receive them, which makes MQTT a staple of smart-home and industrial IoT systems.
Example: Each greenhouse sensor publishes temperature readings over MQTT every 30 seconds.
Usage notes
Created in 1999 by Andy Stanford-Clark of IBM and Arlen Nipper to monitor oil pipelines over satellite links; the "MQ" came from IBM's MQ Series products. It became an OASIS standard in 2014, and the standard now treats MQTT as a name rather than an expansion. Default ports are 1883, and 8883 with TLS.
