NFS stands for Network File System, a networking abbreviation.

A distributed file system protocol that lets Unix and Linux machines mount directories from a remote server and use them as if they were local disks. It is common in data centers, research labs and NAS appliances serving Linux clients.

Example: All web nodes mount the uploads directory from the same NFS export.

Usage notes

Developed by Sun Microsystems in 1984. NFSv3 and NFSv4 are in common use, and v4 adds stronger security with Kerberos and a single well-known port, 2049. NFS plays the role on Unix that SMB plays on Windows, though both platforms can use either. Cloud services such as Amazon EFS offer managed NFS storage.
