1. Normal temperature and pressure

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Gas reference conditions of 20 °C (293.15 K) and 1 atmosphere (101.325 kPa), common in the United States for rating compressors, gas flow and air quality. One mole of ideal gas occupies about 24.06 liters at NTP.

Example: Flow is expressed in liters per minute at NTP, 20 °C and 1 atm.

Definitions vary between standards bodies and industries; in Europe the "normal cubic meter" (Nm3) is usually referenced to 0 °C. Gas-flow specifications therefore state their reference conditions explicitly, and volumes should be converted only after checking which convention a data sheet uses.

2. Network Time Protocol

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

Synchronizes computer clocks over a network, usually to within milliseconds of Coordinated Universal Time, by exchanging timestamps with a hierarchy of time servers. Accurate time matters for logs, certificates, authentication and financial transactions.

Example: Kerberos logins failed because the server's clock drifted; point it at the NTP pool.

Designed by David L. Mills at the University of Delaware and first described in 1985; NTPv4 is RFC 5905 (2010). Servers are ranked by stratum: stratum 0 is a reference clock such as GPS, and stratum 1 servers attach directly to one. NTP uses UDP port 123, and poorly configured servers have been abused for amplification DDoS attacks.

3. Notice to proceed

Law & Legal · Contract Abbreviations

Written notice from an owner or government agency authorizing the contractor to begin work, which usually starts the contract performance period. Completion deadlines and liquidated damages are often measured from the NTP date.

Example: Contract time is 540 calendar days from the date of the NTP.

Projects sometimes issue a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) authorizing early work, such as ordering long-lead equipment, before financing closes. A delayed NTP can give the contractor a claim for additional time or money. The term is standard in public works and energy projects.
