MMI stands for Methimazole, a drug abbreviation.

First-line antithyroid drug for Graves disease and toxic nodular goiter, taken once daily. It blocks thyroid hormone synthesis and is preferred over PTU except in early pregnancy and thyroid storm.

Example: MMI 20 mg daily; recheck free T4 and T3 in 4-6 weeks.

Usage notes

Methimazole (Tapazole) is avoided in the first trimester because it is linked to rare birth defects such as aplasia cutis. Agranulocytosis occurs in a small fraction of patients, usually in the first three months. In the UK carbimazole, a prodrug of methimazole, is used instead.
