1. Lieutenant General (US Army)
Military · US Army Rank Abbreviations
Army three-star general rank, pay grade O-9, held by corps and field army commanders and senior Pentagon leaders such as the Army's deputy chiefs of staff. The grade is tied to the position, so an officer must be nominated and confirmed for each three-star job.
Example: LTG Barnes, commanding general of XVIII Airborne Corps, briefed reporters at the corps headquarters in North Carolina.
The Air Force and Space Force write Lt Gen and the Marine Corps LtGen. "Lieutenant" here means deputy, from French "lieu tenant," holding the place of the commander, which is why a lieutenant general outranks a major general. An officer leaving a three-star post without another must usually retire.
2. Lamotrigine
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Antiseizure drug also used as a mood stabilizer to prevent depressive episodes in bipolar disorder. Brand name Lamictal. It must be started at a low dose and increased slowly over several weeks.
Example: LTG 25 mg daily x 2 weeks, then 50 mg daily x 2 weeks; stop if rash.
Rapid titration raises the risk of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, the subject of a boxed warning. Valproate roughly doubles lamotrigine levels, so doses are halved when they are combined, while estrogen-containing contraceptives lower them. ISMP highlights the look-alike pair Lamictal and Lamisil (terbinafine). In rehabilitation LTG means long-term goal.
3. Long-term goal
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Rehabilitation goal for the end of the episode of care or the expected discharge, such as returning home independently or resuming work. Short-term goals are steps toward it.
Example: LTG (6 wks): independent community ambulation without AD, return to work.
Long-term goals reflect what matters to the patient, such as gardening or caring for grandchildren. Medicare documentation requires goals in the plan of care. Revising goals when progress stalls is standard practice.
