MLIS stands for Master of Library and Information Science, a degree abbreviation.
Graduate degree, about 36 credits, that is the standard qualification for professional librarians in the US and Canada when accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). Coursework covers cataloging, reference, information organization, digital libraries and archives.
Example: The public library job posting requires an ALA-accredited MLIS and two years of reference experience.
Usage notes
Written M.L.I.S. Schools also use MLS, MSLS, MSIS or MI for equivalent ALA-accredited degrees; what matters to employers is the accreditation, not the letters. School librarians usually need a teaching license plus a school library endorsement in addition to or instead of the MLIS.
