1. Megajoule

Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations

Fuel energy content, gas billing in some countries and engineering energy calculations are expressed in megajoules, millions of joules. One liter of gasoline holds roughly 32 to 34 MJ, and a kWh equals 3.6 MJ.

Example: Natural gas usage: 4,380 MJ this quarter at 3.2 cents per MJ.

Australian gas bills commonly charge per MJ. Fuel energy densities are tabulated in MJ/kg or MJ/L: diesel about 38 MJ/L and ethanol about 21 MJ/L, which is why ethanol blends reduce fuel economy. A stick of dynamite releases roughly 1 MJ.

2. Magistrate judge (M.J.)

Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations

Title abbreviation for a United States magistrate judge, a federal judicial officer who handles initial appearances, warrants, detention hearings and discovery disputes and, with the parties' consent, can preside over entire civil cases. Magistrate judges are appointed by the district judges of their court for eight-year terms.

Example: The motion to compel was referred to the M.J. assigned to the case for a ruling.

The abbreviation appears after a judge's name in some opinions, orders and case lists, though many courts spell out "Magistrate Judge". The office was created by the Federal Magistrates Act of 1968 and retitled from "magistrate" to "magistrate judge" in 1990. In federal docket numbers, "mj" marks a magistrate judge matter such as a criminal complaint. M.J. also abbreviates the Military Justice Reporter.

3. Military Justice Reporter (M.J.)

Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations

West reporter, begun in 1975, that publishes decisions of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and the military services' Courts of Criminal Appeals in court-martial cases.

Example: Defense counsel cited three M.J. decisions on unlawful command influence in the motion.

Earlier military appellate decisions appear in the Court-Martial Reports (C.M.R.), 1951 to 1975. The court parenthetical identifies which court decided the case, such as "(C.A.A.F. 2020)". In federal civilian courts, M.J. instead abbreviates magistrate judge.

4. Master of Jurisprudence

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

Law-school degree for non-lawyers that teaches legal reasoning, regulation and compliance in about one year, often online. Loyola University Chicago is a well-known provider, with concentrations in health law, business law and children's law.

Example: Her MJ in health law helped her move from nursing into hospital compliance.

The MJ does not lead to bar admission and cannot be used to practice law. Equivalent programs at other schools are called the Master of Legal Studies (MLS) or Juris Master (JM). Outside education, MJ usually refers to Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson.
