1. Miles per gallon

Measure of fuel economy giving the distance a vehicle travels on one gallon of fuel. US window stickers show EPA city, highway and combined MPG figures, and a higher number means a more efficient car.
Example: The hybrid is rated 52 MPG combined, so a full tank lasts about 600 miles.
Pronounced as letters. UK figures look higher than US figures for the same car because the imperial gallon (4.55 liters) is about 20 percent larger than the US gallon (3.79 liters). Most other countries use liters per 100 kilometers, where lower is better. Because fuel saved is not proportional to MPG, upgrading from 10 to 20 MPG saves far more fuel than going from 33 to 50, the so-called MPG illusion. The EPA revised its test procedures in 2008 to better reflect real-world driving.

Average playing time per game, measured against a regulation length of 48 minutes in the NBA and 40 in college, WNBA and FIBA games. Starters typically play 30 to 36 MPG.
Example: The coach cut his star's load to 30 MPG to keep him fresh for the playoffs.
Wilt Chamberlain averaged 48.5 minutes in 1961-62, more than a full regulation game because of overtime periods. Load management, resting healthy players, became a major topic in the late 2010s. In cars, MPG means miles per gallon.
