1. Most Valuable Player
Sports · Basketball Abbreviations
Award for the best and most important player in a league, season, game or series. The NBA regular-season MVP, the Michael Jordan Trophy since 2022-23, is voted by a panel of about 100 sportswriters and broadcasters.
Example: Nikola Jokic won his third MVP award in four seasons in 2024.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won a record six NBA MVPs, and Stephen Curry in 2016 was the first unanimous choice. The NFL's MVP is voted by the Associated Press, MLB gives one to each league through the Baseball Writers' Association of America, and the NHL's equivalent is the Hart Trophy, which Wayne Gretzky won nine times. Finals MVP and All-Star Game MVP are separate awards; in business MVP means minimum viable product.
2. Mitral valve prolapse
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Billowing of one or both mitral valve leaflets back into the left atrium during systole, affecting about 2 to 3 percent of people. Most cases are benign, but some progress to significant mitral regurgitation, and a small subset develop ventricular arrhythmias.
Example: Mid-systolic click followed by a late systolic murmur; echo confirms MVP with mild MR.
The diagnosis was overcalled in the 1970s and 1980s before stricter echocardiographic criteria were adopted, which is why older prevalence estimates were far higher. Barlow's disease refers to diffuse, thickened, redundant leaflets, while fibroelastic deficiency produces thin leaflets with a single torn chord. In sports MVP means most valuable player, by far the more common meaning.
3. Minimum viable product
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations
Earliest version of a product with just enough features to be used by real customers and generate feedback, built to test a business hypothesis with minimal time and money. Teams then iterate based on how users actually behave rather than on assumptions.
Example: The MVP was a landing page and a spreadsheet; we only built the app after 300 people paid for a preorder.
Frank Robinson is credited with coining the term around 2001, and Eric Ries popularized it in his 2011 book The Lean Startup. An MVP need not be software at all; it can be a manual "concierge" service or a mock-up. In sports, MVP means most valuable player, by far the more common meaning in general English.
