1. Mean platelet volume

Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations

Average size of circulating platelets, reported in femtoliters alongside the platelet count. Larger platelets are younger and more active, so a high MPV with a low count suggests peripheral destruction, as in immune thrombocytopenia, while a low MPV with a low count points toward reduced marrow production.

Example: Plt 38K with MPV 12.9 favors ITP over marrow failure.

Platelets swell in EDTA over time, so delays before analysis raise the MPV, and reference ranges differ between analyzer brands. Some inherited platelet disorders, such as Bernard-Soulier syndrome, feature giant platelets that instruments may miscount as red cells, making smear review important when the MPV is extreme.

2. Multi-purpose vehicle

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Tall, boxy passenger vehicle with flexible seating for six to eight people, known in the US as a minivan and in Britain as a people carrier. Sliding rear doors and fold-flat seats are typical features.

Example: The rental desk upgraded us to a seven-seat MPV for the family trip around Scotland.

The 1984 Chrysler minivans and the Renault Espace of the same year launched the modern segment on each side of the Atlantic. MPV sales fell sharply in Europe and the US as crossovers took over. Mazda sold a minivan named simply the MPV from 1988 to 2016.
