non-HDL-C
Stands forNon-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol
CategoriesMedical

non-HDL-C stands for Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, a laboratory test abbreviation.

Total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol, capturing all cholesterol in atherogenic particles (LDL, VLDL, intermediate-density lipoprotein and Lp(a)). It is accurate in non-fasting samples and is a secondary treatment target, typically set 30 mg/dL above the LDL goal.

Example: Non-HDL-C 190 with triglycerides of 350; adding therapy beyond the statin.

Usage notes

Especially useful when triglycerides are high and calculated LDL becomes unreliable. Many lab reports now print it automatically. UK and European guidelines lean on non-HDL cholesterol for risk assessment because it needs no fasting and no extra test.
