VLDL

CategoriesMedical

VLDL stands for Very-low-density lipoprotein, a laboratory test abbreviation.

Triglyceride-rich particles made by the liver that deliver fat to tissues and are gradually converted to LDL. On a lipid report, VLDL cholesterol is usually calculated as triglycerides divided by five, with a typical range of about 2 to 30 mg/dL.

Example: VLDL 64 on the panel, reflecting triglycerides near 320.

Usage notes

Because the reported value is calculated from triglycerides, it adds little independent information and becomes inaccurate when triglycerides are high or the sample is non-fasting. VLDL remnants are atherogenic and are counted within non-HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B. Pronounced as letters.
