MART stands for Maintenance and reliever therapy, a respiratory abbreviation.
Asthma treatment strategy using a single inhaler containing an inhaled corticosteroid and formoterol, typically budesonide-formoterol, both every day as maintenance and as needed for symptom relief. Each reliever dose also delivers anti-inflammatory steroid.
Example: Switched to MART with budesonide-formoterol 160/4.5, 2 puffs twice daily plus 1 puff as needed.
Usage notes
The Global Initiative for Asthma's preferred track uses ICS-formoterol as the reliever at all steps, and MART at moderate to severe steps, after trials showed fewer severe exacerbations than fixed-dose combination plus albuterol. US guidelines from 2020 call the same approach SMART (single maintenance and reliever therapy). Only formoterol-containing inhalers are suitable because of its fast onset.
