NIPPV stands for Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation, a respiratory abbreviation.

Mask-delivered ventilation with positive pressure, the term common in US charts and neuromuscular and home ventilation practice. It supports patients with ALS, muscular dystrophy, chest wall deformity and chronic hypercapnic COPD.

Example: ALS with FVC 48% and orthopnea: nocturnal NIPPV started; tolerating 4 hours nightly.

Usage notes

In ALS, a trial published in 2006 showed that NIPPV improved survival and quality of life in patients without severe bulbar weakness. The HOT-HMV trial (2017) found that adding home NIV to oxygen after a hypercapnic COPD admission delayed readmission or death. Mouthpiece ventilation during the day is an option for some neuromuscular patients.
