NSIP stands for Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia, a respiratory abbreviation.
Pattern of interstitial lung disease with fairly uniform inflammation or fibrosis of the alveolar walls, often associated with connective tissue diseases such as systemic sclerosis and inflammatory myositis. CT typically shows lower-lobe ground-glass opacities, often sparing the area just under the pleura.
Example: HRCT with symmetric basal ground-glass and subpleural sparing in a patient with antisynthetase antibodies: NSIP.
Usage notes
Described by Anna-Luise Katzenstein and Robert Fiorelli in 1994. Unlike UIP, NSIP looks temporally uniform under the microscope, as if all the injury happened at the same time. It has a better prognosis than idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and the cellular form often responds to corticosteroids and immunosuppressants. A search for an underlying autoimmune disease is routine.
