1. New International Version

Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations

Modern English Bible translation produced by an international, interdenominational committee of evangelical scholars, with the New Testament published in 1973 and the full Bible in 1978. It is among the best-selling English Bibles and balances word-for-word accuracy with readability.

Example: Our church reads from the NIV in Sunday services.

The Committee on Bible Translation updated it in 1984 and 2011; the 2011 edition, which uses gender-inclusive language for people in some passages, replaced the 1984 text and the short-lived TNIV. Biblica holds the copyright and Zondervan publishes it in North America. A simplified children's edition, the NIrV, is written at a lower reading level.

2. Noninvasive ventilation

Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations

Breathing support delivered through a mask rather than a tube in the trachea, usually bilevel positive pressure. Strong evidence supports it in acute hypercapnic COPD exacerbations and cardiogenic pulmonary edema, where it reduces the need for intubation and improves survival.

Example: NIV failed after 2 hours with rising PaCO2 and worsening mental status; proceed to intubation.

Close monitoring is essential because delayed intubation after NIV failure worsens outcomes. NIV is also used to prevent respiratory failure after extubation in high-risk patients and as a ceiling of care for those who do not wish to be intubated. Home NIV treats chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure. Contraindications include inability to protect the airway, facial trauma and vomiting.
