LAMA stands for Long-acting muscarinic antagonist, a respiratory abbreviation.
Inhaled bronchodilator that blocks acetylcholine receptors in airway muscle for about 24 hours, including tiotropium, umeclidinium, glycopyrronium and aclidinium. LAMAs are a first-line maintenance treatment in COPD and an add-on in severe asthma.
Example: Started LAMA (tiotropium 2.5 mcg, 2 puffs daily) for persistent dyspnea.
Usage notes
Tiotropium, the first once-daily LAMA, was launched in the early 2000s, and the UPLIFT trial (2008) showed fewer exacerbations over four years. Side effects include dry mouth, and caution is needed in narrow-angle glaucoma and urinary retention. Many inhalers now combine a LAMA with a LABA, with or without an inhaled corticosteroid ("triple therapy").
