IEEPA stands for International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a US law abbreviation.

Law of 1977 allowing the President, after declaring a national emergency over an "unusual and extraordinary threat" from abroad, to regulate or block economic transactions and freeze assets. It is the legal basis for most US sanctions programs.

Example: The sanctions on the country's central bank were imposed under IEEPA.

Usage notes

Enacted in October 1977 to narrow the broader wartime powers of the Trading with the Enemy Act, it works with the National Emergencies Act. In 2025 it was cited as the basis for broad new tariffs, an unprecedented use that was challenged in court up to the Supreme Court. It is often pronounced "eye-EE-pah".
