1. Greater London Authority

Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations

Regional government for London, made up of the directly elected Mayor of London and the 25-member London Assembly, which scrutinizes the mayor. It oversees Transport for London, policing strategy, fire services, planning and housing.

Example: The GLA approved the mayor's budget, including more funding for youth services.

Created in 2000 after a 1998 referendum, it replaced the Greater London Council abolished in 1986. The mayor is elected every four years and the Assembly partly by proportional representation. It is distinct from the City of London Corporation, which governs only the Square Mile.

2. Gross leasable area

Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations

Total floor area in a commercial property designed for tenants' exclusive use, including storage and mezzanines, used to measure shopping centers and calculate rents and expense shares.

Example: The mall has 1.2 million square feet of GLA and 140 tenants.

Common areas such as corridors and restrooms are excluded. Retail landlords allocate shared costs according to each tenant's share of GLA.

3. Gross living area

Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations

Finished, above-grade living space in a home, measured by appraisers from exterior dimensions, which forms the main basis for comparing homes in a residential appraisal.

Example: The listing says 2,400 square feet, but GLA is 1,850 because the basement doesn't count.

Since 2022, Fannie Mae has required appraisers to measure homes under the ANSI Z765 standard, which excludes basements and below-grade space from GLA even when finished.
