CategoriesEducation & Academia

FRL stands for Free and reduced-price lunch, a K-12 education abbreviation.

Eligibility status for school meals under the National School Lunch Program, available free to children from households at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty level and at reduced price up to 185 percent. The share of FRL students is widely used as a measure of school poverty.

Example: About 70 percent of students at the school qualify for FRL.

Usage notes

Also written FRPL. Because universal free meal programs remove the need for applications, FRL percentages have become less reliable as poverty indicators. Students in some programs, such as SNAP, qualify automatically through direct certification.
