SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a public program abbreviation.
Largest US food assistance program, giving low-income households monthly benefits on an EBT card to buy groceries. It is run by USDA's Food and Nutrition Service through state agencies and serves around 40 million people in a typical month.
Example: Their SNAP benefits are loaded onto the EBT card on the 5th of each month.
Usage notes
It was called the Food Stamp Program until October 2008; the permanent program dates to the Food Stamp Act of 1964. Benefits cannot be used for hot prepared foods, alcohol or tobacco. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 expanded work requirements for adults without young children and shifted part of the program's cost to states.
