Three-point score made by place-kicking the ball between the uprights and over the crossbar during a scrimmage play. Teams usually attempt one on fourth down when within about 55 yards of the goal posts.
Example: A 47-yard FG as time expired gave the Ravens a 23-20 win.
Distance includes the 10-yard end zone and the seven-yard hold, so a ball snapped from the 30 produces a 47-yard try. Field goals were worth five points until 1904 and four until 1909. In basketball FG means any basket other than a free throw.
