FUM stands for Fumble, an American football abbreviation.
Loss of possession by a ball carrier before the play is dead, which either team can recover. Box scores show FUM for total fumbles and FL (fumbles lost) for those recovered by the defense.
Example: He ran for 112 yards but had two FUM, one of them lost at midfield.
Usage notes
Not every fumble is a turnover, since many are recovered by the offense. Under the "Holy Roller" rule adopted in 1979, on fourth down or after the two-minute warning only the player who fumbled may advance the ball for the offense. A fumble out of the opponent's end zone is a touchback.
