1. Facebook

Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations

Shorthand for Facebook, the social network owned by Meta, used in conversation and posts ("saw it on FB," "FB Marketplace"). Still the largest social network by user count worldwide.

Example: My aunt shared the article on FB and now the whole family is arguing.

Facebook launched in 2004 at Harvard and opened to the public in 2006. Its parent company renamed itself Meta in 2021. Younger users often associate FB with parents and grandparents, while Facebook Marketplace and Groups remain widely used for local buying and community news.

2. Foreign body

Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations

Object that has entered the body where it does not belong, such as a splinter, swallowed coin, object in the ear or nose, or debris in the eye. Emergency notes specify location and removal method.

Example: Corneal FB removed with 25g needle under slit lamp; fluorescein uptake minimal.

Button batteries and multiple magnets swallowed by children are emergencies because they can cause rapid tissue damage. Radiolucent objects such as wood or plastic may not appear on X-ray. Retained foreign bodies are a common cause of wound infections.

3. Fullback

Sports · American Football Abbreviations

Offensive back who usually lines up in front of the halfback in two-back sets and serves mainly as a lead blocker, occasionally carrying on short-yardage plays or catching passes in the flat. The position has declined as offenses use more three-receiver formations.

Example: The 49ers keep a FB on the roster to lead-block in their outside-zone running game.

Originally the deepest back in early formations, hence "full" back. Kyle Juszczyk of the 49ers became one of the few fullbacks to sign a large contract in the 2020s. In soccer and rugby, "fullback" or "full-back" refers to a defensive position instead.
