1. Health care proxy
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations
Person legally appointed by a patient to make medical decisions if the patient loses capacity, and the document that appoints them. The term is standard in New York and Massachusetts.
Example: HCP invoked: patient lacks capacity, son is agent per signed proxy.
Called a health care agent, durable power of attorney for health care or medical power of attorney elsewhere. The proxy usually takes effect only after a clinician documents loss of capacity. In general use HCP can also mean health care provider or personnel, so context matters.
2. Handicap
Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations
Golfer's numerical measure of playing ability, used to adjust scores so players of different levels can compete fairly. A lower handicap means a better player; scratch golfers play to zero.
Example: Entry form: name, club, HCP index (max 36.0).
Since 2020 the World Handicap System has used a Handicap Index up to a maximum of 54.0, replacing six earlier national systems. A course handicap adjusts the index for the difficulty of a particular course and tees. Also written HDCP.
