1. Deutscher Aktienindex (German stock index)
Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations
Benchmark index of the 40 largest and most liquid German companies traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, such as SAP, Siemens and Allianz. It is a performance index, meaning dividends are assumed to be reinvested.
Example: The DAX hit a record as investors bet on lower interest rates in the euro area.
Launched in 1988 with a base of 1,000 and 30 members, the DAX expanded to 40 companies in September 2021. Because it includes reinvested dividends, its level is not directly comparable with price indices such as the Euro Stoxx 50. It is calculated by an index business majority-owned by Deutsche Börse Group.
2. Data Analysis Expressions
Technology & Computing · Data & Database Abbreviations
The formula and query language of Microsoft Power BI, Analysis Services and Power Pivot for Excel, used to define calculated columns and measures such as year-to-date sales or growth versus the prior year.
Example: The DAX measure uses CALCULATE with SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR to compare against last year.
Introduced by Microsoft in 2010 with Power Pivot. Its syntax resembles Excel formulas, but its evaluation context, especially filter context, is notoriously tricky for beginners. In finance, DAX is the benchmark index of 40 major German companies traded in Frankfurt.
