CUSIP stands for Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures, a stock market & investing abbreviation.
Nine-character code identifying a security, such as a stock, corporate bond or municipal bond, in the United States and Canada, used for trading, clearing and settlement. The first six characters identify the issuer, the next two the issue, and the last is a check digit.
Example: Enter the bond's CUSIP in the search box to see its latest trade prices.
Usage notes
The system was created in 1964 under the American Bankers Association and is operated by CUSIP Global Services, owned by FactSet since 2022. A CUSIP forms the core of a US or Canadian ISIN, which adds a country code and another check digit. Licensing fees for CUSIP data have drawn antitrust complaints.
