ISIN stands for International Securities Identification Number, a stock market & investing abbreviation.

Twelve-character code defined by ISO 6166 that uniquely identifies a security worldwide, made up of a two-letter country code, a nine-character national identifier and a check digit. It is used in cross-border trading, settlement and regulatory reporting.

Example: The prospectus lists the bond's ISIN as XS followed by ten characters, marking it as an international bond.

Usage notes

ISINs are assigned by national numbering agencies, such as CUSIP Global Services in the US, which embeds the CUSIP inside the ISIN. The XS prefix is used for international securities settled through Euroclear and Clearstream. EU rules such as MiFID II require ISINs in transaction reporting.
