1. Cumulative Layout Shift
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
A Core Web Vitals metric that scores how much visible content unexpectedly moves while a page loads, such as text jumping when an ad or image appears above it. A score of 0.1 or less counts as good.
Example: Reserving space for the banner ad brought CLS down from 0.32 to 0.04.
Unlike the other vitals, CLS is a unitless score rather than a time. Its calculation changed in 2021 to measure the worst burst, or session window, of shifts instead of the total across a page's whole life. Setting width and height on images and reserving space for embeds are the standard fixes.
2. Combat lifesaver
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Non-medical soldier trained in advanced first aid, such as applying tourniquets, treating chest wounds and starting care for casualties, as a bridge until a medic arrives. Each squad aims to have at least one.
Example: The CLS applied a tourniquet and packed the wound before the medic arrived.
Combat lifesavers carry an expanded aid bag. The program dates from the 1980s and became more important in Iraq and Afghanistan. In computing, CLS means clear screen, and in web performance it means cumulative layout shift.
