CLD stands for Clear liquid diet, a nursing abbreviation.
Diet limited to liquids that are transparent at room temperature, such as water, broth, apple juice, plain gelatin, popsicles and tea without milk. It is used before colonoscopy and some surgeries, and as the first step after bowel rest.
Example: Advance to CLD this evening; NPO after midnight for colonoscopy.
Usage notes
Clear liquids leave little residue in the gut, but they provide few calories and little protein, so a CLD is meant for only a few days. Red and purple liquids are often avoided before endoscopy because they can mimic blood. In neonatal and pulmonary medicine CLD means chronic lung disease.
