C&DB stands for Cough and deep breathe, a nursing abbreviation.
Pulmonary hygiene instruction asking the patient to take slow deep breaths followed by a strong cough, used after surgery, in immobile patients and in those with retained secretions. Nurses coach each session and chart the cough and sputum.
Example: Encouraged C&DB and IS hourly; productive cough with thick white sputum.
Usage notes
Also written CDB or C/DB. Huff coughing, a forced exhalation with an open throat, is a gentler alternative for patients who cannot tolerate forceful coughs. After some eye, brain or hernia operations vigorous coughing is avoided because it raises pressure in the operated area.
