1. Bachelor of Science

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

Standard undergraduate science degree in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, India and much of the Commonwealth, lasting three years in England and four in Scotland. An honours BSc adds a dissertation or research project and a final classification such as first-class or upper second.

Example: Applicants need a BSc (Hons) with at least a 2:1 in biology or a related subject.

Usually written without periods in British style, and "BSc (Hons)" marks an honours degree. The Latin original is Baccalaureus Scientiae. In the US the same degree is written BS, though some American universities with international ties also print BSc on diplomas.

2. Bedside commode (BSC)

Medical · Nursing Abbreviations

Portable toilet chair placed next to the bed for patients who can get up but cannot safely walk to the bathroom. Nurses chart BSC use when documenting toileting, transfers and output.

Example: Up to BSC with assist x1, voided 300 mL clear yellow urine.

Most models also fit over a regular toilet as a raised seat with arms, and drop-arm versions allow sliding-board transfers. Because many inpatient falls happen during unassisted toileting, fall-risk patients are put on scheduled toileting rounds. Therapists often recommend a BSC as durable medical equipment for home.

3. Balanced scorecard (BSC)

Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations

Performance management framework that tracks strategy across four perspectives: financial, customer, internal business processes, and learning and growth. Rather than relying only on financial results, it pairs each strategic objective with measures, targets and initiatives.

Example: The board now reviews the BSC quarterly, with customer retention and staff training weighted equally with margin.

Robert Kaplan and David Norton introduced the balanced scorecard in a 1992 Harvard Business Review article. Organizations often display it alongside a "strategy map" that links the four perspectives in a cause-and-effect chain. Public-sector and nonprofit users frequently adapt the perspectives, putting mission or citizen outcomes at the top.
