1. Central venous catheter

Medical · Nursing Abbreviations

Catheter whose tip ends in a large vein near the heart, inserted through the internal jugular, subclavian or femoral vein, or peripherally as a PICC. It allows vasopressors, irritant drugs, rapid infusions and central venous pressure monitoring.

Example: CVC L IJ triple lumen placed 11/3, dressing C/D/I, all ports flush.

Usually called a "central line". Insertion bundles (hand hygiene, full barrier precautions, chlorhexidine skin prep, avoiding the femoral site when possible, daily review of need) reduce bloodstream infections, which are tracked as CLABSI. On payment cards CVC means card verification code, an unrelated meaning.

2. Corporate venture capital

Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations

Investment by an established company directly into outside startups, usually through a dedicated venture arm, to gain strategic insight, partnerships or future acquisition options as well as financial returns. Well-known CVC units include GV (formerly Google Ventures), Intel Capital and Salesforce Ventures.

Example: Two CVC investors, a carmaker and a battery supplier, joined the startup's Series B.

CVC investors often co-invest alongside traditional venture firms. Founders weigh the strategic benefits against concerns such as signaling risk, since a corporate investor may deter rival acquirers. In card payments, CVC instead means card verification code, the security number printed on a card.
