1. Dilated cardiomyopathy
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Heart muscle disease in which the left ventricle, or both ventricles, enlarge and pump weakly without enough coronary or valve disease to explain it. Causes include genetic variants (notably in the TTN gene), viral myocarditis, alcohol, chemotherapy, pregnancy and persistent tachycardia, but many cases remain idiopathic.
Example: Nonischemic DCM, LVEDD 6.8 cm, EF 20%; genetic panel and cardiac MRI ordered.
DCM is one of the most common reasons for heart transplantation. Peripartum cardiomyopathy and tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy are subtypes that may recover with treatment. Because roughly 20 to 35 percent of idiopathic cases are familial, first-degree relatives are often screened with echocardiography.
2. Dichloromethane
Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations
Volatile chlorinated solvent, CH2Cl2, used for extractions, chromatography and paint stripping, and formerly to decaffeinate coffee. It dissolves a wide range of organic compounds and boils at about 40 °C, but the body metabolizes its vapor to carbon monoxide, and exposure in enclosed spaces has been fatal.
Example: The aqueous layer was extracted three times with DCM, and the combined organics were dried over sodium sulfate.
Also called methylene chloride, the name on most product labels. In 2024 the US EPA finalized a rule banning consumer and most commercial uses of methylene chloride after deaths during bathtub refinishing and paint stripping. In a separatory funnel DCM forms the bottom layer because it is denser than water.
3. Debt capital markets
Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations
Investment bank team that helps companies, governments and agencies raise money by issuing bonds, notes and other debt securities. DCM bankers advise on structure, maturity, currency and timing and coordinate pricing with the bank's syndicate desk.
Example: DCM priced the company's $1 billion 10-year bond at 120 basis points over Treasuries.
Some banks split DCM into investment-grade and leveraged finance teams. Fees per deal are typically lower than for ECM or M&A work, but deal volume is much larger. The term also distinguishes public bond markets from private and syndicated loan markets.
