1. Concentrated
Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations
Label for reagents supplied at full commercial strength, especially acids: conc. sulfuric acid is about 96-98% H2SO4, conc. hydrochloric acid about 37% HCl and conc. nitric acid about 68-70%. In procedures it also means a solution was reduced in volume by evaporation.
Example: Carefully add conc. H2SO4 dropwise to the cooled solution with stirring.
Concentrated acids are among the most hazardous everyday lab reagents; the rule "add acid to water," never the reverse, prevents violent spattering. Phrases such as "conc. in vacuo" mean the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, usually on a rotary evaporator.
2. Concentrate (conc)
Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations
Label term for a more concentrated version of a drug, usually an oral liquid or injectable that must be measured with special care or diluted before use. Examples include oral morphine and oxycodone concentrates and potassium chloride concentrate for injection.
Example: Morphine oral conc 20 mg/mL, 0.25 mL (5 mg) SL q2h PRN dyspnea.
ISMP and the FDA have repeatedly warned that the 100 mg per 5 mL morphine concentrate has been confused with the 10 mg per 5 mL solution, causing deaths. Concentrated potassium chloride vials were removed from most US patient-care units after Joint Commission safety goals in the early 2000s.
