ATIS stands for Automatic Terminal Information Service, an aviation abbreviation.
Continuous recorded broadcast at busier airports giving current weather, runways in use, approaches being flown and important NOTAMs. Each update is assigned a phonetic letter, and pilots tell ATC which one they have so the controller need not repeat it.
Example: Before calling ground, the first officer copied ATIS information Bravo: wind 270 at 12, visibility 10, landing and departing runway 27.
Usage notes
Pronounced "AY-tis." Broadcast on a dedicated VHF frequency and updated at least hourly or whenever conditions change significantly. Airliners can also receive a text version, D-ATIS, through ACARS. At small airports without ATIS, automated AWOS or ASOS stations fill the same role for weather.
