1. Actual time of departure

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Recorded time at which a flight or vessel actually left, as opposed to the scheduled or estimated time. For airlines it is normally the moment the aircraft pushes back from the gate; takeoff is logged separately as "wheels off."

Example: ATD 09:47 local, wheels up at 10:05 after a long taxi queue at JFK.

Departure delay statistics compare ATD with the scheduled time of departure (STD). At congested airports such as New York's, taxi-out times can exceed half an hour, so a punctual pushback does not guarantee a punctual takeoff. In airline movement messages, ATD is written in UTC.

2. Antithyroid drug

Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations

Medicines that block thyroid hormone production, mainly methimazole, carbimazole and propylthiouracil, used to treat Graves disease and other causes of hyperthyroidism and to prepare patients for surgery or radioactive iodine.

Example: Graves disease: ATD methimazole 15 mg daily x 12-18 months, then reassess TRAb.

A course of 12 to 18 months leads to lasting remission in a minority of Graves patients, roughly a third to a half, and relapse is common. Agranulocytosis is a rare but serious side effect, so patients are told to stop and get a blood count if fever or sore throat develops. Beta-blockers control symptoms while ATDs take effect.
