Zeph. stands for Zephaniah, a Bible book abbreviation.
Three-chapter prophecy from the reign of King Josiah warning of the "day of the Lord," a day of wrath and darkness, followed by restoration for a humble remnant. Its imagery inspired the medieval hymn "Dies irae".
Example: "That day is a day of wrath" (Zeph. 1:15) gave the Latin requiem its "Dies irae".
Usage notes
SBL writes Zeph, and short forms use Zep. The prophet's genealogy traces back four generations to a Hezekiah, possibly the king. The book ends with God rejoicing over Jerusalem with singing.
