Book of 31 chapters covering the prophet Samuel, the anointing of Saul as Israel's first king and the rise of David, including his defeat of Goliath in chapter 17. Together with 2 Samuel it was originally a single book.
Example: Hannah's prayer in 1 Sam. 2 is echoed in Mary's song in Luke's Gospel.
Usage notes
SBL writes 1 Sam, and short forms use 1 Sm. Older Catholic Bibles, following the Vulgate, call 1 and 2 Samuel "1 and 2 Kings" and the books of Kings "3 and 4 Kings". Spell out "First Samuel" at the start of a sentence in formal writing.
