1 Esd. stands for 1 Esdras, a Bible book abbreviation.
Greek book that retells material from 2 Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah and adds the story of three guards competing to name the strongest thing, concluding that "great is truth, and mighty above all things" (4:41). It is canonical in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Example: The Latin motto "Magna est veritas" comes from the contest in 1 Esd. 4.
Usage notes
Naming is confusing: the Latin Vulgate calls this book 3 Esdras, and the Greek Septuagint calls it Esdras A. SBL writes 1 Esd. It appears among the Apocrypha in Protestant Bibles that include them, such as the KJV of 1611.
