XRT
Stands forRadiation therapy (X-ray therapy)
CategoriesMedical

XRT stands for Radiation therapy (X-ray therapy), a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Older but still common abbreviation for radiation therapy, especially external beam treatment with X-rays, seen in medical histories, oncology notes and surgical records. It is used interchangeably with RT.

Example: History of left breast lumpectomy and XRT in 2011; now with new contralateral mass.

Usage notes

The X refers to the X-rays that most external beam machines deliver. Patients with prior XRT have tissue changes that affect later surgery, wound healing and further radiation, so the field, dose and dates are recorded. Long-term effects can include fibrosis, secondary cancers and heart disease after chest radiation.
