CategoriesMedical

ABVD stands for Adriamycin (doxorubicin), bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Standard chemotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma, given intravenously on days 1 and 15 of each 28-day cycle. Early-stage disease typically needs two to four cycles, often with radiation, and advanced disease six cycles.

Example: Stage IIA Hodgkin: ABVD x2, interim PET Deauville 2, then AVD x2.

Usage notes

Developed by Gianni Bonadonna's group in Milan in the 1970s, it replaced the older MOPP regimen because it caused less infertility and fewer secondary leukemias. Bleomycin can cause serious lung toxicity, so it is often dropped after a negative interim PET scan, as supported by the RATHL trial (2016). Newer combinations replace bleomycin with brentuximab vedotin or nivolumab.
