7+3 stands for Seven days of cytarabine plus three days of an anthracycline, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Standard intensive induction chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia, combining continuous cytarabine infusion for seven days with daunorubicin or idarubicin on three days. It aims to clear leukemia from the bone marrow and achieve complete remission.
Example: AML induction with 7+3 started; day 14 marrow to assess for residual blasts.
Usage notes
The regimen was introduced in the early 1970s and remained essentially unchanged for decades, though targeted drugs such as midostaurin for FLT3-mutated AML and gemtuzumab ozogamicin for some subtypes are now added. Profound low blood counts last weeks, so patients usually stay in hospital. CPX-351, a liposomal formulation of the two drugs, is used for therapy-related AML.
