XMP stands for Extreme Memory Profile, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Intel specification for storing tested overclocking settings, such as speed, timings and voltage, on a memory module so that users can apply them with one setting in the BIOS. Without it, RAM runs at slower default JEDEC speeds.
Example: The 6000 MT/s kit was running at 4800 until I enabled XMP in the BIOS.
Usage notes
Intel introduced XMP in 2007; XMP 3.0 arrived with DDR5 in 2021 and allows user-editable profiles. Profiles are stored in the module's SPD chip. Advertised speeds are guaranteed only with the profile enabled and on a compatible motherboard and processor. AMD's equivalent for DDR5 is EXPO, and many motherboards also translate XMP profiles for AMD systems.
