1. All-in-one computer
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Desktop computer whose components are built into the same housing as the display, so only a power cable, keyboard and mouse are needed. Apple's iMac is the best-known example.
Example: The receptionist got an AIO to save desk space and cut cable clutter.
Early all-in-ones include the Commodore PET (1977) and the original Macintosh (1984); the colorful iMac G3 of 1998 revived the category. AIOs look tidy but are hard to upgrade or repair, and when the computer becomes obsolete the screen goes with it. In PC cooling, AIO also means an all-in-one liquid cooler.
2. All-in-one liquid cooler
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Closed-loop water-cooling kit for a CPU, combining a pump-and-cold-plate block, tubing and a radiator with fans in a sealed, pre-filled unit. Radiator sizes such as 240, 280 and 360 mm describe how many fans it holds.
Example: The 360 mm AIO keeps the 16-core chip under 80 degrees during rendering.
AIOs are easier to install than custom loops and need no refilling, but their pumps eventually wear out. To avoid air bubbles collecting in the pump, the pump should not be the highest point in the loop; top-mounted radiators are safest. Large air coolers often match mid-size AIOs in performance with no risk of leaks. AIO also refers to all-in-one desktop computers.
