BMC stands for Baseboard management controller, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Separate microcontroller on a server motherboard that lets administrators monitor sensors, view the console, mount installation media and power the machine on or off remotely, even when the operating system has crashed or the server is switched off.
Example: The server froze, so I rebooted it through the BMC web interface from home.
Usage notes
Vendor implementations include Dell iDRAC, HPE iLO, Lenovo XClarity Controller and Supermicro IPMI; open-source OpenBMC firmware is also used. Many BMCs use chips from the Taiwanese company ASPEED. Because a BMC has deep access to the hardware, it should sit on an isolated management network and never be exposed to the internet.
