IPMI stands for Intelligent Platform Management Interface, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Standardized interface for out-of-band server management, letting administrators check temperatures and fans, read event logs, access the console and control power through the baseboard management controller.
Example: Use ipmitool to power-cycle the hung server over the network.
Usage notes
Intel, Dell, HP and NEC published IPMI in 1998; version 2.0 arrived in 2004. Security researchers found serious weaknesses, including an authentication flaw that exposes password hashes, so it should only run on isolated networks. The DMTF's Redfish standard, introduced in 2015 with a modern REST API, is replacing IPMI in new servers.
