IOPS stands for Input/output operations per second, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Storage performance metric counting how many separate read or write operations a drive or array completes each second, usually measured with small 4 KB random accesses. It matters more than raw throughput for databases, virtual machines and operating-system responsiveness.
Example: A hard drive manages about 150 random IOPS, while the NVMe SSD exceeds 900,000.
Usage notes
Pronounced "EYE-ops". IOPS figures depend on block size, queue depth and read/write mix, so vendor numbers measured at high queue depths rarely match desktop use. Cloud providers sell storage tiers by guaranteed IOPS, such as provisioned-IOPS volumes. Latency, measured in microseconds, is the companion metric.
