1. Height
Medical · Patient Assessment Abbreviations
Standing height, recorded in centimeters or inches, used with weight for BMI, drug dosing, kidney function estimates and ventilator settings based on predicted body weight.
Example: Ht 172 cm, Wt 81.4 kg, BMI 27.5.
Measured height is preferred over stated height, since people often overestimate it. For bedbound patients, length can be measured in bed or estimated from knee height or arm span. Lung-protective ventilation uses predicted body weight calculated from height and sex rather than actual weight.
2. Half-time (HT)
Sports · Soccer (Association Football) Abbreviations
Interval between the two 45-minute halves of a soccer match, lasting 15 minutes under the Laws of the Game, or the score at that point.
Example: HT: 0-0 in a cagey London derby.
Live score apps show the half-time score in parentheses, as in "2-1 (HT 0-1)". Bets on "HT/FT" combine the half-time and full-time results. In other contexts HT means height or hat tip.
3. Haiti (HT)
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Haiti, on the western third of Hispaniola, became the first Black-led republic and the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean on January 1, 1804, after a successful slave revolution. Port-au-Prince is the capital and HTI the alpha-3 code.
Example: Remittances sent to HT make up about a fifth of the country's economy.
French and Haitian Creole are the official languages; the language code ht means Haitian Creole. Haiti paid France an indemnity for its independence for more than a century, a debt widely cited as a cause of its poverty.
4. Hyper-Threading (HT)
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Intel's trademarked implementation of simultaneous multithreading, which lets each processor core handle two threads at once. Spec sheets for chips with HT list twice as many threads as cores, such as "8 cores, 16 threads".
Example: Task Manager shows 12 logical processors because the 6-core chip has HT enabled.
Intel introduced Hyper-Threading in 2002 on Xeon server chips and the Pentium 4. Its hybrid processors from 12th Gen Core onward enabled HT only on the performance cores, not on the efficiency cores. With the Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake) and 200S (Arrow Lake) chips in 2024, Intel removed it entirely, saying the space and power were better used elsewhere.
5. Hull Maintenance Technician (HT)
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Shipboard metalworkers and plumbers who weld, braze, cut and fabricate repairs to a ship's structure, piping, ventilation and sewage systems. They also serve as key members of damage-control repair parties.
Example: HT2 Lopez welded a doubler plate over the corroded deck section before the inspection.
Their work keeps a hull watertight between shipyard periods, and many HTs earn welding certifications recognized by civilian industry. Ashore, HTs work in intermediate maintenance facilities that support ships in port.
6. HyperTransport (HT)
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
High-speed point-to-point link developed by AMD that connected processors to each other and to chipsets, used in Athlon 64 and Opteron systems from 2003 until the early 2010s.
Example: Opteron servers linked their CPU sockets with HyperTransport, also called HT, instead of a shared front-side bus.
AMD introduced the technology in 2001 and shared it through the HyperTransport Consortium; it was also used in some networking chips and Apple's Power Mac G5. It gave AMD an early advantage over Intel's shared front-side bus until Intel launched QuickPath Interconnect in 2008. AMD replaced it with Infinity Fabric in its Zen processors from 2017.
