DDR5 stands for Double Data Rate 5, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Fifth generation of DDR memory, introduced in consumer PCs in late 2021, offering higher speeds (4,800 MT/s and up), larger module capacities and better power efficiency than DDR4. It is the standard for new desktop platforms from Intel and AMD.
Example: DDR5-6000 CL30 is the recommended kit for Ryzen 7000 and 9000 builds.
Usage notes
JEDEC published the DDR5 standard in July 2020. Each module splits into two independent 32-bit subchannels and carries its own power-management chip (PMIC) instead of relying on the motherboard. DDR5 chips include on-die ECC, which corrects internal errors but is not the same as full ECC memory. Early DDR5 systems were slow to boot because of lengthy memory training.
